Have you guys heard of the recent archeological finds pointing to Vikings that might have come in contact with the pre-Inuit cultures of Dorset or Thule!
I'm looking for newspaper articles or anything associated. The archeologist who is in charge of these finds around Baffin Islands north of Nunavut is a lady whose last name is Sutherland... I forgot her first name, and I'm struggling to find newspaper articles related to her finds =(!!
The Baffin Islands finds are from around November of 2009, I haven't been able to find the original articles, I can't remember what Canadian Newspaper I read them from. But sadly, I know they aren't from Globe and Mail, or the Star.
Supposedly Sutherland is going to continue her excavations this year, though I do not know what month or if it is happening as I type this.
I've tried googling more recent articles, but I can't find anything.
Her theory is that the Vikings (or Norse culture) had come in contact with the Dorset or Thule because of the evidence of Yarn and viking specific tools made of metal (iron) in certain stratas of soil.
Due to her finds, the idea of the Thule/Dorset expansion across to Eastern Canada has to be pushed to being close to a few hundred years to a mere few decades that they expanded. This is because of evidence of a meteor that hit Southern Greenland that dates to similar time frame of the yarn and iron tool deposits... the Thule/Dorset cultures would be highly interested in Iron as well, due to the fact that Iron equates to harpoon or other weapon construction materials.
When I find the source material.. would anyone here be interested in reading about it too??
._. I'm sorry if no one here likes looking into historical Canadian news, if I'm just wasting your time with this interest of mine...
